Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter and is the beginning of a new year. Matariki means the ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or ‘little eyes’ (mata riki).
Maori mythology says that the sky father, Ranginui, and the earth mother, Papatūānuku, were separated by their children. The god of the winds, Tāwhirimātea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens.
It was a time for remembering the dead and for celebrating new life. In the 21st century, observing Matariki has become popular again

For 2018, June 7th is listed as the day that Matariki sets and July 6 - 9 as the rising, which is when you can see Matariki just above the horizon before the sun comes up. The celebration period for 2018 has been set for 6 -13 July.
