Some games and activities ideas:
1. "STOMP" Show a STOMP video from the selection below. (Most have seen them before and love this!)
Organise class into smaller groups and give them some sturdy every-day classroom objects - preferably one each, but sharing and working in pairs can also work. Review 4/4 timing - or counting 1,2,3,4; 1,2,3,4 and then give them an allotted period of time to come up with a 30 second to one minute performance demonstrating using the items in a musical way. Revise audience and performer skills and expectations as part of the lesson.
STOMP kitchen
STOMP Brooms
STOMP - suspended
STOMP Dustbin lids
2. Statues - Play your choice of music or from any of the dance links above. Pause the music and give a pose for the students to assume as a statue. Anyone who moves is out. Last one in wins. Plenty of scope for variety. One to avoid testing their resilience is to divide the room in half and those who are out can still participate but on the other side of the room.
Ideas for statues: cat, dog, bird (animals etc), can "statue" actions or emotions - playing tennis, rugby, netball, cricket, swimming etc; or use emotions - happy, sad, frightened, angry; or set up situations such as brushing teeth, sneezing, seeing a friend, opening a heavy door, sneaking past sleeping parent to get access to the tv remote . . . have fun making up situations.
3. Drum Game: Similar to statues, but teacher keeps a steady beat on any surface or clapping. Students move feet to the beat, freeze when beat stops. Start with a steady beat -then add a change of beat or rhythm. Students can sit down and clap (copy) a beat. For examples of different beats, see the tab Music rhythm charts at the top of the blog.
4. Pass the object: Use a small soft toy / tennis ball or similar and pass around the circle on the beat of any song / nursery rhyme of your choice. (Three blind mice, Mary had a little lamb, Row, Row, row your boat. You can also use any of the music or dance tracks of your choice. You may need to practice first before the music starts.
